| 8th Grade Girls December 14, 2011: Cranford 59 – Edison 45 The Edison Lightning 8th grade girls travel basketball team played their first Garden State League “A” division game of the season at Cranford. At first Edison was taken aback by the physical Cranford team, falling behind early 8 – 0. However, the Lightning quickly regained their footing, and took the lead going into half time at 27 – 22. The teams went back and forth with Cranford pulling ahead 49 – 45 with a few minutes left to play. Unfortunately for Edison, playmaker Ashley Hunt, went down with an injury and had to leave the game, and Cranford broke Edison’s press with multiple fast breaks to pull away 59-45. Jenna Harsh led Edison with 18 points, while Kathleen Tong (12 points) and Ashley Hunt ( 7 points) also provided offense for Edison. Dana Afflu provided her usual defense and rebounding. Lauren Tencza, Grace Kau, Prachi Sinha, Rebecca DiSerio, and Nicole Dua also contributed offensively. December 22, 2011: Long Hill 59 – Edison 53 In their second Garden State “A” division game, Edison stunned last year’s Garden State League “A” division champions Long Hill, racing out to a 16 – 0 lead in the first few minutes. Lead by hot shooting from Jenna Harsh (16 points), Ashley Hunt (16 points), and Nicole Dua (12 points), the Lightning looked unstoppable. However, the proud champion Long Hill was not going to lie down in their own gym. Applying a furious press, Long Hill quickly came back and pulled ahead 35 – 32 at half time. The teams battled the rest of the way with Long Hill hanging on for a 59 – 53 win. Kathleen Tong, Lauren Tencza, Molly Yelencsics, Rebecca Diserio, Dana Afflu, and Prachi Sinha all contributed for Edison. December 28th, 2011: South Brunswick Holiday Tournament: Edison 38 – South Brunswick 7th grade 21 In its first game in the South Brunswick Christmas Tournament Edison easily defeated a South Brunswick 7th grade team. The Lightning applied a stifling defense to hold South Brunswick 7th grade to a paltry 2 points in the first half. Edison had a balanced attack with Ashley Hunt (11 points), Kathleen Tong (10 points), Rebecca DiSerio ( 5 points), Grace Kau (4 points), Molly Yelencsics (4 points), Lauren Tencza (2 points), and Dana Afflu (2 points) all contributing to the victory. December 29th, 2011: South Brunswick Holiday Tournament: Edison 43 – South Brunswick 8th grade - 31 Edison moved to 2-0 in the South Brunswick Holiday Tournament defeating South Brunswick 8th grade 43 - 31. Ashley Hunt (16 points), Nicole Dua (12 points), Kathleen Tong (7 points), Grace Kau (4 points), Lauren Tencza (2 points), and Dana Afflu (2 points) provided the offense while Molly Yelencsics and Rebecca DiSerio provided defense, passing and rebounding. December 29th, 2011: South Brunswick Holiday Tournament: St. Francis Metuchen 59 – Edison 43 With both teams looking to stay undefeated and to secure a spot in the finals, Edison lost to a tough St. Francis team. St. Francis/Edison star center Jenna Harsh was the difference for St. Francis, facing constant double teams, providing open looks for her teammates, and providing impenetrable interior defense. Harsh worked to the point of exhaustion against the running Edison team. Edison pushed the ball the entire game and had a balanced attack with Ashley Hunt (12 points), Nicole Dua (8 points), Kathleen Tong (7 points), Lauren Tencza (4 points), Molly Yelencsics (4 points), Rebecca DiSerio (4 points), Dana Afflu (2 points), and Grace Kau (2 points) all contributing. Edison (without Harsh for the tournament) finished in a tie for second but lost out on a chance for the finals on a tie breaker. St. Francis (with Harsh for the tournament) won the tournament. Congratulations to all who played! January 7, 2012: Edison 45 – East Orange 44 With Nicole “Swish” Dua hitting key shots, including the game winner; with Jenna Harsh back drawing double (and triple) teams and blocking shots for Edison (instead of against); and with Kathleen “I can shoot from another zip code” Tong pumping in threes, Edison pulled out a 45-44 comeback shocker against East Orange. But this was no one, two, or even three girl show. Dana Afflu and Prachi Sinha provided instrumental lockdown defense. Ashley Hunt made sparkling plays. Lauren Tencza hit outside shots and defended taller opponents. Grace Kau contributed on offense and defense. It took a total team effort for Edison, behind virtually the entire game until Dua’s last shot, to get its first win in the tough Garden State League American Division. January 15, 2012, Edison 39 – Basking Ridge 32 Edison won its second straight Garden State American Division game to even its record at 2 wins and 2 losses. Edison was down 8 to 4 early, but went on a 16 to 1 run to take a 20 to 9 halftime lead. The run was highlighted by a flying catch and score by Molly Yelencsics, a driving hook shot by Lauren Tencza, and multiple steals and scores by Nicole Dua. Basking Ridge fought back in the second half but was thwarted by scores from Jenna Harsh: one a driving left handed power move, and the other a foul line jumper off a slick feed from Kathleen Tong; and scores from Ashley Hunt on two nifty inside runners. Prachi Sinha added offense and Grace Kau added defense to keep Edison ahead. Rebecca DiSerio helped close out the win, with her usual no prisoners style of defense. |
